"As we look back on our week at Mooncottage,it almost seems like a dream. Mooncottage's location amidst tropical trees and beautiful flowers immediately set a tone of tranquility, an escape from the "hustle-bustle" of every day life. We appreciated the openness of the cottage that encouraged us to truly relax and enjoy the beauty of our surroundings. The phenomenal view of Coral Bay never got old and we returned to the deck often for reading, conversation, and quiet moments. Of course we found the private pool very refreshing at any time of day or night. We loved the modern decor, the attention to sensory details (.ie. fresh flowers and homemade soaps), and the amazing lighting. Mooncottage is truly a romantic hideaway that gave many fond memories and rekindled our marriage of 28 years. Thank you, Brian, for sharing your labor of many years and your "honeymoon" cottage with us. We hope to return again very soon."
Woolrich, CT - September 2011 Brian, thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of work. This is really the most magical place on earth! 25th Anniversary.
Baltimore, MD - September 2011 We came to realize during our stay at Mooncottage … vacations like life are unpredictable. A rainy shower at the beach becomes utterly romantic! Run’ins with the many creatures of the island –deer, goats, hermit crabs, chickens, fish, geckos and donkeys. (My favorite!) … makes a simple day feel like a safari Driving is a challenging task and nervous experience, but, somehow becomes a cherished home movie. But, ultimately what we truly came to realize is that it is not out the season, location or even the occasion. It is about the person you are blessed to share this experience with. Did we love our stay here? MOST DEFINITELY! Mooncottage just has a way of enhancing all the beauty in things we tend to loose sight of. It reminds us of people, place and things we are most grateful for. PS. Thank you for giving us a memorable 1st week of married life! PSS. Can’t wait for the next time we can enjoy this little piece of heaven.
Vail, CO – July-August 2011 Wow!!!! Brian … we appreciate your dream and labor of love. Truly we couldn’t have asked for a better honeymoon. As we walked up the stairway leading to Mooncottage and got our tour of it, we knew we were in for something very special. As each day passes the wind chimes, the trees and birds and insects chirping makes you appreciate the sounds away from everyday life. We thank you for that. The pool and romantic setting brings out the kid in you-cannonballs are a great way to start off your day! Take suggestions—be sure to blaze your own trail as those are the best memories. Snorkeling gear is a must-as each beach has its own underwater beauty. Off the beaten path. We enjoyed Maho, Little Lamesur, Salt Pond and Leister Bay (Water Lemon) … be sure you snorkel here! Many great restaurants around. Zozos .. best fine dinner and beautiful sunset. Skinny’s: Best burgers and laid back. Aqua Bistro: Best drinks around as everyone says the Grouper Sandwich is fabulous. Beach Bar in Cruz Bay: great times and great drinks plus good people. Don’t forget to take pictures with the Donkeys … where else could sit in the middle of the road and look so cute. Newlyweds!
Milwaukee, WI – July 2011 Everything about our stay at Mooncottage and St. John exceeded our expectations. We visited many beaches and did several hikes, but sitting on the front deck watching the clouds blow by is the place we liked the most. Your attention to detail was obvious as soon as we rolled into the driveway. We loved the stone flooring and beautiful woodwork. If I thought about building a dream home for 10 years I wouldn’t be able to come up with something as perfect as this. Aside from our time spent here we also enjoyed much of what St. John has to offer but feel like we just scratched the surface. We especially like Salt Pond Bay, Waterlemon and Lameshur. We had an amazing honeymoon and hope to return soon!
Harris, NC - June 2011 Last night here … and we are sad to leave this paradise within paradise—Mooncottage. What can we say that has not been said already … so “Ditto.” I don’t think anyone could be unhappy or disappointed being here. It was serendipitous that we stumbled upon the Mooncottage website. We feel so happy that we had the chance to spend our Honeymoon here. Having built our own house and reading your book about the building of Mooncottage experience, we both laughed and cried especially the part where you “buried your sanity and checkbook” … we can relate. Your hard work and passion for this place really shows. We even enjoyed all of your reading material. My husband loved “Me and My Beloved Virgin” by Guy Benjamin ... wish we could have met Guy while we were here. (Guy is almost 100 years old at the time of this writing) This has truly been the trip of a lifetime, one we will never forget. Thank you so much for what you have created and sharing it with others. We are already putting pennies in the Piggybank for another trip here in the future. Highlights: Late night swims in the pool, shooting stars, snorkeling at any beach, swimming with turtles at Salt Pond, Honeymoon Beach… Drink Right, Stay Left (a mantra here and a drink), dinner at Sweet Plantains, great owners so please support them. So special!
Sonoma, CA - June 2011 (not long enough to stay) Our first night at Mooncottage we were welcomed by a torrential rainstorm – thunder and lightning like we have never witnessed. Sat on the deck with a Rum and Coke and just taking it all in—what a sight! Woke up first morning to an amazing sunrise, and hadn’t even heard my husband get up to capture the beauty with his camera. Think we will be handing that photo at home! To those of you who are reading this first—stay left and watch out for goats! Lameshure Bay is a 10 minute drive and one of the quietest beaches on the island. Don’t stop at the first pull out (Rocky Beach) unless you just want great snorkeling. If you are looking for sand, keep driving and you will find Little Lameshur … our favorite. Use the outdoor shower by the bedroom at Mooncottage! You won’t need a towel you will dry off in minutes. I wish I could bottle up this weather! Good eats, Lucy’s, Aqua Bistro, Skinnys. To Brian: Words can’t describe the feeling one has visiting this very special creation of yours. Quite a visionary! Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing it with us all! We will be back (with a suitcase ½ as big).
June 2011 - OMG! Brian … this place is amazing. All of the attention to detail and thoughtfulness put into it. We had a crazy romantic time in SJ … but especially at Mooncottage. Thank you “Brother!” This is the most beautifully designed place. Thought we were living in a movie. It is everything you promised!
CT - June 2011 Celebrating our 10th Anniversary and just loved it here! Spent a lot of our time relaxing and enjoying this beautiful home but we explored the island too. Loved the closeness to nature –the evening chorus of night sounds and waking to the birds. The trees, flowers and cacti all gorgeous and we loved the tree that is part of the house (actually growing through the house). Brian … seeing the work that went into the building of Mooncottage made us appreciate it all the more …and be even more happy that you have been willing to share your home. What a lovely, secluded place to unwind, relax and reconnect. We spent a lot of time just hanging out here, but our favorite place down the hill were Aqua Bistro and Shipwreck Landing. It has been amazing to sit on the deck to watch the changes of the clouds come in and out. Brian, you have thought of everything we could possible need or want here at the house. Thank you for sharing your special home. PS. On our last day we hiked to the petroglyphs on Reef Bay Trail and because it was a rainy week were treated to an amazing waterfall—what a nice surprise. Time to go – goodbye little geckos.
Austin, TX – May 2011 Brian, when you just told me about your little place in heaven, I thought it couldn’t be. Well … you know it certainly is! All (guests) have said it collectively over and over … and it is true. The beauty and love that went into Mooncottage—I have never had a vacation that I didn’t want it to end. This is a first! I needed the peace, quiet and relaxation you have here. Being disconnected from hustle and bustle is just what this family needed. I will return one day.
Miami, FL – May 2011 Brian, thank you for all of the thought and love that went into making Mooncottage what it is. We made a list during our stay of all of the special touches. Our favorite (although we had many) was the wind chimes. We bought the same one in Cruz Bay (Caravan Gallery) to take home to keep our wonderful stay here with us at home—and to remind us how precious life really is especially with the perfect person by you side of 29 years. I was trying to remember the last time I enjoyed the kind of peace and tranquility and it was on our yacht that succumbed to a hurricane. That has been a while! Although we live in beautiful Miami, we truly never get tired of the Ocean breezes and the weather. But what we don’t get a lot of is time together alone away from it all. This is the best example of that. We have always known our strong love for each other and how special it really is, but Mooncottage highlights it in every way for me! Thank you again for a wonderful week. PS. My husband loved the wood, stone flooring, design, pool, lighting and landscaping.
Concord, NH – April 2011 OH MOONCOTTAGE! We have been to St. John before but never at Mooncottage. What an amazing retreat to relax, rest and rejuvenate. What an extraordinary property. We are completely torn between the beauty of Mooncottage and the natural beauty of St. John. Do we stay or do we go? We did both of course and had a fabulous week. The weather was so beautiful and the wind was blowing the last 2 days here. Fantastic snorkeling at Haulover Bay (Southside) and Little Lameshur … great meals at Aqua Bistro, Skinnys and Donkey Diner. Coral Bay is a great! Loved the pool, the lights … so pretty we watched hummingbirds and hawks circle above. The stars at night were so delightful. Thanks to Brian and Suwadee for greeting us.
Portsmouth, RI - March 2011 Brian … finishing up our 4th stay at Mooncottage which continues the best way for a single couple to experience St. John. Always magical … and had a great dinner last night at Sweet Plantains with our daughter and three friends. Thanks for having us … and for the NEW IMPROVED road!
St. Paul, MN – February 2011 Our 3rd trip here in 5 years. Clearly we are hooked! First visit to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. Then our 60th birthday. And this year, our 40th Anniversary. Good thing we have a never ending supply of reasons to celebrate. Perfect weather this week—thanks
Chicago, IL – February 2011 Dear Brian … we came to Mooncottage to celebrate our 45 years of marriage. We have been to many wonderful places in the world, from Africa, Singapore, South America, Japan and of course throughout the United States. Mooncottage is the most dramatic, peaceful and special view. Mooncottage itself equals the view!!! Thank you for being here. PS. Brian – you and Mooncottage are indeed a class act.
Nashville, TN -January 2011 (She) “An engineering feat, architectural wonder, maximized efficiency executed with style and class. Every detail has been thought out, with literally no stone left unturned to give expression to a place that evokes the thoughtful care to nature in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright. With the amenities that well-traveled Americans like to encounter like piles of fresh towels, a well equipped kitchen, plenty of hot water, a clean pool and on and on and on. We have found no deficiencies, except a shortage of time which will leave us longing to return, which I always have said is the perfect way to leave. The view is stunning and for a honeymoon cottage, beyond compare. I’ve been dreading reaching the calendar date of “50”, simply because of the mental imagery that number of years evoke, The alternative to reaching “50” in earthly years certainly has its appeal as a Christian, but after coming to here and reveling in the serenity of this place with the love of my husband, I have found the perfect answer of blending a sublime, heavenly experience in very earthy, sensual ways. All wrapped up together in this beautiful package (gift) Mooncottage. Thank you for following through with your vision and making it available to folks like us. We anticipate returning and look forward to hearing and seeing further visions that you may birth.”
(He) “Our last afternoon and I am enjoying one more lazy sunset from the chairs on the porch. We have enjoyed a great week here on St. John. Mooncottage was “AS ADVERTISED” and even more! We appreciated the grandeur of the view (your original vision) and the detail of all the little things to numerous to mention that makes this place so very special. Thank you for creating such a wonderful place. The week was very short … always a good sign of a great vacation. We take wonderful memories and a longing to return with us. Many thanks for everything.”
January 2011 “I’ve read what the others have said and “ditto!” This is an amazing place. However, I feel we have just scratched the surface of St. John and Mooncottage. We stayed here a lot of our time just enjoying and savoring our time with one another. We went to Salt Pond beach and ate at Sweet Plantains and danced at Shipwreck, but mostly we enjoyed coming back to Mooncottage. I floated in the pool and listened to some classical music. And … we met PILGRIM! He came up in the morning and at night and is the true “owner”” of Mooncottage. (Pilgrim is a very special cat) We LOVE it here. It is the greatest place we have ever stayed. We will be back to savor everything that St. John has to offer … but it will take more than a week! Than you all for the wonderful hospitality. Bob was a great help in explaining everything and making us feel at home. This was a special birthday celebration and will be remembered always. As everyone has said, you have done a wonderful job with all of the details and taste. Thank you! (we love Pilgim) We will be back!"
January 2011 “What a great way to start off a second decade together—Mooncottage is truly a spectacular getaway… that forces you to separate for your daily grind! As much as we appreciated all of the amenities, we didn’t watch a single movie on the large TV once … the sights and sounds were just too rejuvenating. Thanks again for a great stay! Favorites include: Food - Shipwreck Landing, Skinny’s, LaTapa in Cruz Bay. Fun and sun - Snorkeling at Salt Pond & Leister Bay – could stay there ALL day.”
January 2011 “Thanks for such a gorgeous place! Every detail is so exquisitely thought out. Slice of heaven, I will be back!”
Aug 2010 “St. John is a magical place, and so is Mooncottage. Thank you for making our first week of marriage pure bliss! We will be back. Awesome stuff to do while here: Ram’s Head Hike, Salt Pond Bay, Haulover Bay, Trunk Bay, Waterlemon Cay (best snorkeling on island), Honeymoon Bay, and you will have it ALL to yourself if you arrive in the AM. Thank you for sharing this beautiful villa with us!”
Little Elm, TX- July 2010 “To all of those who make Mooncottage what it is, we absolutely loved the beauty, splendor, color and feel of this slice of paradise. And are so happy we chose this as our honeymoon destination! Everything from the fresh flowers, homemade soap, movies, books, music and even the Geckos added to the ambiance. We stood in awe every day as we looked out over the breathtaking views. The beauty of life radiates all throughout Mooncottage!!!! Thank you for our time at this amazing creation.”
Grand Forks, ND - July 2010 “Mooncottage is absolutely amazing!!! My husband and I read the story and have truly fallen in love with this slice of heaven on Earth. We loved falling asleep to the chorus of native creatures here. You should consider recording their songs and making a CD. I know we would buy one just to remind us of the amazing time that we spent here. Thank you for allowing us the privilege.”
Woodstock, GA - July 2010 “Another wonderful time at Mooncottage. I believe this is number FOUR for us, and I am already looking forward to the next trip! This is still the perfect place! I love the new additions! You were right, July is a GREAT time to be here. I thought it would be very hot but, not so. Thanks again for sharing this beautiful place with us again this year!"
June 2010 “We honestly couldn’t have found a better place than this to spend our honeymoon! The view is beautiful and absolutely breathtaking, the pool is the perfect size for two; a place where we can cool off and just hang out and enjoy each other’s company. It truly is “secluded” ; just perfect for a newly wed couple.”
San Diego, CA - June 2010 “What a tremendous time we had at this beautiful villa. We could not think of a more perfect way to spend our honeymoon. Reading about how much time, effort, love and ultimately $ that went into Mooncottage’s construction made being here all the more special. It was amazing how upon arrival, all of the wedding day stress just melts away. St. John is phenomenal. The beaches, local hangouts, and food were all fantastic. Miss Lucy’s for Sunday Jazz Brunch was so nice and conveniently close. I cannot say enough about driving on the island. I had an absolute blast four-wheeling it up to Mooncottage’s peaceful steps. The view every morning was proof that we chose the most perfect location to spend our first week of marriage. The pool was perfect and afforded us several late night dips. Overall, Mooncottage and our stay on St. John proved to be everything we could have imagined in our hearts and I know that as our marriage and family grows, Mooncottage will henceforth be our destination of choice. We both thank you for a most enjoyable stay! Wishing all the best to your and yours."
Pine Bluff, AK - May 2010 “Thank you for a truly wonderful week at Mooncottage. It has been a beautiful, relaxing retreat for us, absolutely perfect! We loved being here on Calabash Mountain by OURSELVES and then wandering down each day for a new adventure. Being on St. John is like being at summer camp in paradise. We went hiking, snorkeling, running about in a little dinghy, exploring land and sea. God is great and his creation is awesome! You have built a little “Shangri-la” from which to experience this island. Thank you for graciously sharing it with us.”
May 2010 “Your villa is truly a labor of love. Nothing you haven’t heard countless times. Each day began with new discoveries. We enjoyed watching the geckos and humming birds and the visit from Pilgrim was a pleasant surprise. When it comes to snorkeling, it’s hard to pick a favorite. We saw too much in every location—turtles, sea stars, baby barracudas and huge schools of fish. One also mustn’t forget Miss Lucy’s for dinner at least once and Sweet Plantains is without compare. But, the most memorable times were just sitting on you beautiful patio and having my fiancé propose to me!!!!
The perfect place. The perfect moment. The perfect man. Thank you for everything.”
Willamsburg, VA - April 2010 “Thank you for a wonderful time. This place is wildly special. Feels magical. Love all of the small touches. And, the view was different every morning!”
Asheville, NC- April 2010 “Honestly, I don’t know where to begin. I am sitting on the front porch drinking in the incredible view and wondering where the last eight days and nights have done. What a WONERFUL 39th anniversary trip we have had staying at your little piece of heaven—Mooncottage. What an extraordinary and magical place and what a labor of love. Amazing. What creativity and perseverance you had with your vision. We are thrilled you climbed that Mampoo tree that day and became a man on a mission Thank you so VERY MUCH for sharing your Mooncottage with us—it will be etched in our memories forever. We will hate to say goodbye and head down that road tomorrow morning for the last time, but ever so thankful that we were among the privileged few who were able to enjoy romantic Mooncottage. Thank you again for everything and for making our Anniversary so very special. We loved it! Until next time …. !
Fort Lauderdale, FL- April 2010 “Our week has come and gone, but our memories will last a lifetime. I will let my poem say the rest.
“Ode to Mooncottage”
In a cottage at the top of a hill, breezes blow, thoughts are still, hummingbirds flitter by alongside the butterfly. Gentle melody fills the air dreaming dreams beyond compare. Waking at the break of dawn, time spent here lingers on. Sun shining down on turquoise waters, Island native sons and daughters. While gazing off from the deck, my husband gently kissed my neck. Balmy days and starry nights, savory tasting food delights. Distant sounds of a rooster’s crow. Donkeys and goats you’ll get to know. Mango soap and outdoor showers, Mooncottage must hold special powers.
Our 30-year anniversary spent here. Thank you!
Boston, MA - March 2010 “Can’t believe our MONTH here at Mooncottage has gone. If you are staying here now and reading this book, then I don’t need to tell you how amazing this place is! The craftsmanship and attention to detail and view are all equally amazing! Love the outdoor showers—and indoor ones too. Thank you so much for your kindness and hospitality. The place, the service was everything we expected and more! Can’t wait to come back!”
February 2010 “When Scott, first informed me that we were going to spend our vacation in a villa on St. John, I knew it would be magnificent. But, NEVER could I have envisioned Mooncoottage’s magnitude of beauty. Your labor of love is truly unmatched. Thank you for allowing us to share your slice of heaven here on earth. Without a doubt we will be back." (BTW: These wonderful guests rebooked for the next year the day they returned home.)
February 2010 “Honeymoon cottage for sure! Thank you! Our first stay here and worth the research we had done to find this unbelievable villa. Obviously “Moon” is a labor of love. We started skimming the “Day or Night” book and couldn’t help but to read the whole thing from its beginning to its end. A true masterpiece. The perfect word my new husband came up with to describe the owner of Mooncottage while reading this book on how Mooncottage was created was “passionate.” I couldn’t have agreed more. We’re so lucky to have been here for this week surrounded by such creativity and beauty that Moon has offered. We will definitely make this place another honeymoon for us in years to come. Thank you to all of your staff that also made things so special and made us feel so welcome. We will certainly treasure this place in our hearts and hope other visitors to St. John get the same experience some day! Married Feb. 21st on Trunk Bay.“
February 2010 “The final morning at Mooncottage. We’ve been to St. John before but never like this! There isn’t anything more to write about the beauty of this place, so I am just going to say we REALLY over packed! If you are reading this, you will understand ”
Portsmouth, RI – January 2010 “Our 3rd Mooncottage story was as expected—outstanding! It is always amazing to walk onto the porch after a long travel day to see the lights on Tortola twinkling in the distance … not to mention the sunrise the next morning! We will be back soon, and continue to tell our friends about the experience. Thanks again!”
Baltimore, MD – January 2010 “After being involved with building for 25 years, I read with fascination the task of getting Mooncottage to completion. Please know that you wasted not one bit of effort. I appreciated every detail and I think you got it just right. It was a perfect place for a honeymoon and we have the most amazing memories. I tossed and turned the whole night because I was so afraid to miss the sunrise—I woke in time, and walked to the balcony and literally burst into tears at the beauty! We sat on the porch for breakfast and found ourselves giving thanks to God for the sheer beauty—and the gift it was to see it from here. We can’t wait to tell our friends about it… and we must get back here someday soon. Please to all who come here. Love the quiet. Gaze long at the view. Savor the delight of Mooncottage!”
Venice, CA – December 25th 2009 “Christmas in Paradise. To write about our week’s stay at Mooncottage could fill ALL these pages. Your home is a work of art—skillfully crafted to allow the island winds, sounds and sights to sink into every port. I’ve already tried this week to describe Mooncottage to another visiting couple and my words could not come out fast enough and when they did, I realized there is truly no way to explain the sense of peace and serenity that comes with Mooncottage. Your attention to detail is ridiculous!!! SO thoughtful and made with love … and so appreciated. For us nature lovers, no rock was left unturned here in beautiful St. John. (we put them back though) No donkey was left un-met and absolutely NO SUNRISE was left unseen. We LOVED, LOVED, LOVED our week and feel that no one should live life without a stay at beautiful Mooncottage on Coral Bay. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!"
New Orleans, LA – November 2009 “What an amazing place to spend our first week together! The peace and tranquility was just what we needed. St. John is so nice. Coral Bay was lovely, but Mooncottage was the highlight of this vacation! Many thanks for the time, energy and hard work that made this place a reality! We won’t soon forget our wonderful week here."
November, 2009 -- “What a “Gem” on the mountain! Mooncottage stands out with not only the incredible views but it’s beauty and warmness. The place is absolutely perfect for couples to get away and truly not only feel relaxed but to take in the ‘Island Feelin’ You did a wonderful job with this home and thank you for sharing this great place with us."
Decatur, AL – November 2009 “On the way up to Mooncottage along this winding road I was thinking, “What have we gotten ourselves into?” But … once we pulled into the drive and walked through the cottage to that amazing view, I knew we were in for a true week of R&R. Every day we discovered something new about the cottage—the design, the attention to detail, the craftsmanship and continuity is all astounding. A labor of love indeed! Just when we get the hang of island living, it’s time to head home. We loved the geckos, and discovered the largest hermit crabs we have ever seen! And, the surprise of seeing the donkeys ALSO wandering around St. John everywhere… I think they actually enjoy having their picture taken. It’s been a great week and overdue getaway. Certainly the perfect way to celebrate 12 years of marriage."
Chatham, IL – October 2009 “I have never been one to willingly wake up at sunrise, but Mooncottage and St. John have made me a believer. What a VEIW! Peace often seems just out of reach, but, we were able to find it here. Thank you. The best parts? Well, the living creatures of course! Frogs, hummingbirds, geckos, (our favorite) a baby iguana in the trees in front of the patio only 4 inches long. Countless hours were spent devoted to watching his daily activities. And also high on the list, the garden, the wind chimes, the outdoor showers, (why on earth would you shower INSSIDE when you can lather up among the palms!) Lameshur Bay was worth the drive, Totally absolutely private and gorgeous. Thank you again for an unbelievable week"
June 2009 - Woodstock, GA “What a wonderful week we had here again this year. 3rd trip back. This once a year treat fuels the mind to handle all that awaits in the “real world.” The lesson to learn is to let your mind come during the real world to make each day, a “Mooncottage” Day! I just need to find a way to record the wind chimes and other special sounds and take it back! Maybe you should record and sell it! Thank you for sharing this special place once again. We look forward to our next visit to Mooncottage.”
May 2009 -- Chadds Frod, PA “On our honeymoon, we recorded this entry into the guest book in a restaurant in Santorini, Greece, as we watched the sun set. And set. And set. You know how it is. 10 years later, we’re writing a new entry, at a locale nearly as gorgeous and special as the one in which we spent our honeymoon, a little wiser, a little older, and if possible, even happier. As the sun over Mooncottage lowers, the hummingbirds flit and Bob Markey sings strong. We still have our humor, our love, and God willing your sense of adventure to build this house. A good anniversary indeed. We feel fortunate to have the live we live, along with an opportunity to explore beautiful places like St. John, and more specifically, to opportunity to play at a home as inviting as Mooncottage, which by the way has everything you want, and then some. Such attention to detail and the hospitality afforded us with each dramatic view certainly reflects a generous spirit, eager to share what’s so amazing about this little piece of paradise. And, thank goodness, if you are still reading this, you probably already know a little bit about what I am writing. Have you stood at the top of Ram’s head yet and felt the wind tornadoing around you? Have you gotten up super early and been the first one at Waterlemon? Seen Sea Turtles and Sting Rays? Have you tripped down the stairs at Jumbie Beach yet and snorkeled Trunk Bay and back? Or tried to count the stars after a few ‘Painkillers?’ Or driven around the whole island 4-wheels engaged of course, and found a new remote part of the island? Or a new old set of ruins? Or walked straight up the Johnnyhorn Trail, all the way to Brown Bay where all the Conch Shells are? And out at East End and hitchhike back to town? Do these things and more! Let your senses be your guide. That, and the smile of the one you’re with. In another ten years we hope to own our own Mooncottage, along with all that we cherish in each other today, If we do, we will be lucky indeed.”
April 2009 - Lejune Camp, NC “My wife loved the road up the hill! She just cracked up the whole time up! Now I know why you said “man, you need a four wheel drive.” When you arrive here at Mooncottage, you still don’t believe it. It’s like Christmas waiting to see something that you know you will like. However, you still have some apprehension. Gentle music was playing and Jeff was great. OKAY OKAY. I’ll get to the cottage. YOU REALLY CAN’T DESCRIBE IT. My wife says “Tranquility.” Myself, being a Marine for 12 years now, I guess I’m supposed to say something brutal. Ha! However, this is what I wanted. It is absolutely BREATHTAKING! As a Marine I am always being deployed somewhere overseas, I was fortunate to not go into Iraq or Afghanistan this last tour, Woo Woo! The views just tell you to STOP! Look at Me! And I did. For an hour at first! The night sky was gorgeous. We had one bird sing to us all night and the hummingbirds in the day were priceless. Oh god ... I am writing on the last page of this guest book. This morning I awoke to a morning view that was simply ridiculous! As someone who has been all over the world and seen some beautiful things and some horrendous things, this place, when you sit down, download, decompress, and just sit and look is …. Wow! I damn near came to tears. I’m here in a beautiful place, with my wife sleeping in the room next door, and I am at PEACE!!! I broke, the tears are here. (suck it up Marine) No way! I’m here and there in no place else I’d rather be.”
March 2009 -- Stevens Point, WI “We enjoyed our stay immensely—don’t want to return to the “Frozen North.” Would love to own a place down here someday … and have begun our search. Hope to return next year; though don’t know if my kids would enjoy the solitude as much as we did. Will recommend Mooncottage to friends and family!"
March 2009 -- St. Paul, MN “It took us three years before we were able to return to Mooncottage—hopefully not so long for our next visit.”
February 2009--Portsmith, RI "What a relaxing week. As I recalled from my previous visit, I had to come up with a compelling reason to leave the property—but the beaches are great/ Many thanks for introducing us to Sweet Plantains—best food on the island! We can’t wait for our next visit."
January 2009 - New York, NY “This vacation has been an amazing time for my parents and me. I guess I’m the first child writing about Mooncottage in this book so my parents wanted me to write that because it makes this letter “special.” I loved the beaches, especially Salt Pond and Cinnamon Bay. The water is much different than Long Beach, New York. The water is WARM! I love every evening after dinner. You designed the house amazingly! It really fit in with nature. I loved the heated pool! Once I woke up my parents early. They threw me in the pool. I was still relaxing. I loved every minute of this vacation. And, those roads are roller coasters! Yikes! Thank you so much. We will hope to come back soon! Good bye."
PS … I don’t wanna’ go back to the cold.”
January 2009 -- South Carolina “We are totally in love with St. John and the Coral Bay Side. From our arrival and escort in with Jeff who told us that all the locals here have retreated over here and that makes it funky! We love the people and places on east End. For the past 9 days it is like living in a small town where everyone knows you and sees you 4 times a day out and about. Favorite restaurant (they were all very good) was Bordeaux Mountain for New Year’s Eve. Sweet Plantains is also delightful. But the best for local color is Shipwreck Landing. Haulover Bay for snorkeling was spectacular and the other great beaches and hikes were Waterlemon Cay, Brown Bay, and the very best Europa Bay Trail out by Great Lameshur Bay. It is like you have researched the end of the world and guess what? Incredible~! Mooncottage provided a restful place in between adventures. The wind chimes will be forever in my mind. Thanks Brian for calling on New Year’s Day and checking to make sure we were OK! We will be back to St. Johns’ funky side real soon and Mooncottage."
December 2008 – Houston, TX “As we prepare to enjoy our final evening here at the Magical Moon Cottage … we are so grateful for the vision and dedication to bring this dream to fruition. Also, to Jeff and Candy for their loving care of the place and everyone’s attention to detail—we are amazed and delighted to have stayed here. The view is something we’ll never forget, though we know pictures will not do it justice, we took LOTS of them! We love St. John and the glorious beaches, wonderful cuisine, friendly people, great hikes and snorkeling… truly an unforgettable trip."
December 2008 -- “As I write this, my husband is on the beautiful patio savoring the stunning view from the top of the mountain that nestles Mooncottage. Although we still have a couple of days to savor, I wanted to take some time to write while the beauty inspired me, and while my new husband sleeps.
Our romance was a whirlwind – six months ago from the first glance to wedding day and all of it long distance. Me in PA and him in NC. A whirlwind. But, we arrived in St. John to dash to the courthouse to get our marriage license and life began to slow down. We drove up the hill through the gates of Mooncottage and peace and tranquility followed. We married on the balcony here, overlooking the beautiful view, and literally began our married life together at Mooncottage. We could not imagine a more peaceful place for us … at plan to return on our anniversaries … to paradise. Your villa is a masterpiece of simplicity, beauty, design and elegance. Yours was a labor of love and it shows it minute detail of each design challenge and how you overcame it. Appointed beautifully, comfortable, clean and private! Exquisite taste. As I sit and listen to the sound of the wind chimes, I know that I will carry the sound of those chimes and the beauty of what it represents for me always!"
November 2008 – Columbus Ohio “To come up with a word to describe Mooncottage is almost impossible. The closest I can come up with is 1 word … LOVE. The love and passion of your journey from climbing a tree, to creating this loving environment flows throughout Moooncottage. From the moment we entered the gate and drove up the hill peacefulness filled us. I watched my wonderful mate of 25 years shed the stress of work in a matter of hours. “Magical” maybe … but loving definitely. Serenity and peace have flooded our hearts with each moment we have spent here. Your work of love will remain with me always. For other guests … enjoy! Snorkeling is incredible. Try Kiddle Bay and Salt Pond. Don’t miss Waterlemon Cay. Spend the time to awake at sunrise—it’s gorgeous! And don’t miss Ms. Lucy’s! Our goal is to return each year on our anniversary. I’ll work double shifts if I have to! Thanks again."
November 2008 “Thank you for sharing this labor of love you have. I feel you are generous to allow others to stay here. I had 15 glorious days with perfect weather, excellent snorkeling and a dynamite stay! This truly helped us appreciate the 25 years of our union together. We left our Ohio life behind and felt that we became island folks! Stress is killing me … and your book, Demolishing Stress with Laughter helped me get a grip on what is truly important. We are looking forward to our next stay.”
August 2008 - Wichita, KS "Mooncottage: Secluded – Elegant – Romantic – Simple"
“Wow! You have a vision and an attention to the detail. The little things that make a lasting impact. One’s that my wife, Leslie and I can really appreciate. True. You really DON’T want to leave. But, it makes coming back even more exciting. This was my 20 year anniversary gift to my wife. I think it was the best days in so many ways. Mooncottage will never be forgotten and I will MOST DEFINITELY be back—Quiet – Hypnotic – Erotic. Thank you again! "
July 2008 “For our first anniversary, my husband had researched Mooncottage online. So he had some idea of what we were doing, but I was completely unprepared for the luxury. We were both amazed at your attention to detail. The love and craftsmanship that went into Mooncottage is unmatched. So much to enjoy, but our favorites were: the incredible view, the sun on our skin, the amazing solar heated pool, the outdoor showers, the way the ceiling boards were matched, the lighting system, the towels, the lizards, the amenities in the kitchen, and the flowers. The perspective that Mooncottage has given us on the island and ourselves has made us want to stay. Thank you for letting us experience this little slice of heaven.”
June 2008 - Tennessee - “We’ve had an amazing honeymoon this week at Mooncottage. This has been the trip of a lifetime! The view from this villa is breathtaking as well as all the beautiful flowers and wildlife. Everyone made us feel right at home here in St. John, We just loved it!”
June 2008 - Tennessee - “Our experience of Mooncottage will never leave us. We will never forget its beauty, charm and all of the little details that make this place so luxurious as well. And the view—fantastic! It will be hard to leave here, leave paradise, the pool, the lizards, the deck, the view, the little mango-butter soaps, and … the POOL! We are grateful and thankful to be here and to have experienced the beauty and love of this island and each other.”
June, 2008 - Vermont “What a perfectly exquisite space! Thank you, for your vision, commitment and patience in creating Mooncottage. The inspiration we found here is drawn from many people who worked so hard to build this house, from the locals, who are positively lovely people, from the romantic energy added to in no small part by the guests themselves, and from this Jewel of an island … St. John. We are deeply thankful for the opportunity to be here and humbly reminded that few people have such good fortune to experience such sumptuous luxury. To you newlyweds: Congratulations! We write this on our 25th wedding anniversary. Our love is not only undiminished, it has grown literally tenfold. Thank you again!”
Peace.
May 2008 - Branchville, NJ – “What an amazing week we had at Mooncottqe Thank you for creating such an incredible place and for opening it up for others to enjoy. Mooncottage is truly a lover’s paradise and the intimate setting among the tropical gardens and the pool overlooking the bay and Tortola is spectacular. We couldn’t believe all of the hummingbirds! We spent a good deal of time here at Mooncottage enjoying the pool and the view and celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary.”
May 2008 "For our honeymoon, we wanted privacy, a beautiful house and a great view - all in a beautiful location: Mooncottage. Thank you for giving us EVERYTHING. Except for the beaches, we never left Coral Bay. Thank you again for the beautiful home in a beautiful location."

April 2008 "My husband woke me up at 3AM in the morning and said we were going for a drive and this is where he brought me as a surprise 3rd year wedding anniversary romantic getaway. Mooncottage has left us speechless, it is so absolutely beautiful and we feel like it has been made just for us! Our trip to St. John is something that we will never forget and long to return soon. Everything about this place is perfect! Wow!"
April 2008 - New York, NY "As I sit overlooking the view on our last day at this paradise I try to come up with the words to express how grateful we are for your generosity and hospitality! We were the free honeymoon winners for Brides Manhattan! Being here at Mooncottage for the week has enabled us to dream again - it has also given us faith that there is way more beauty and goodness in the world than angst and pain. We finally had what most couples experience from the first day of engagement thru to the honeymoon. The simple pleasure of being in love and enjoying each other! I think you know how special a place this is, as you are spiritual and have built it. Mooncottage has made us hermits - we never wanted to leave. We stocked up on food the first day and only returned when we ran out! My last thought is that your heart and soul went into this home, and you are so generous to open it to all of us to share in it. Jeff and Candy, the attention to detail did NOT go unnoticed! Prince and Rose of Sweet Plantains - professionally driven and humble! The best dining spot on St. John, Hands Down!"
March 2008 - Dallas, TX "We came to St. John and Mooncottage to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary. We wanted a relaxing and rejuvenating vacation and we certainly got that! Mooncottage is beautiful and the love and care with which it was built is evident all around. The view is spectacular and we never tired of just gazing at the horizon. We enjoyed the daily show of lizards, hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and bird that occupy the gardens. The drive up was a BLAST! Very comfortable space and our best adjective would be ENCHANTING! Thank you for making such a great home available to us dreamers!"
March 2008 - Westfield, NC "The artistry of this wonderful place is AMAZING! We had SUCH a great time. Our favorite times at Mooncottage were the unexpected little surprises that nature had to offer us like the perfect sunrises every morning. The evening light on the water, mongooses scurrying, the underwater world, hummingbirds in the garden and on and on and on! Being people who ourselves built an artistic house ourselves, we really enjoyed yours and extend a warm invitation to you as well! This was our 25th wedding anniversary."
March 2008 - Philadelphia, PA "Jeff and Candy greeted us at the St. John ferry dock with a warm welcome which was the perfect start to our incredible week at Mooncottage. We could spend another few months here easily. The local restaurants and hang-outs are a lot of fun! Try all of them! Sweet Plantains is delicious! The house, the pool, the view, the landscaping, and everything else at Mooncottage is superb! Enjoy your stay."
February 2008 - Asheville, NC "This week at Mooncottage was my birthday gift. Like another guest I read about, I too hit the big 4 Oh! No, life does not suck, as long as you continue to suck the joy out of it! There are repeating phrases throughout this guest book, I could write those same words as well to describe Mooncottage. But, those words seem to not describe it. So, if you are HERE and you are reading this guest book, then you know! You are part of this story. You know Mooncottage."
January 2008 - Plano, TX "We are feeling a little lazy now. We have had a restful and peaceful stay at Mooncottage! We did a lot of staring down-island and at the stars! Your gardens are beautiful and the cottage is one of a kind! Looks like we picked the perfect paradise spot! We will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary this July, so we are not on our honeymoon. But, we are celebrating life, friendship and love! Tonight we ate at Sweet Plantains and met your friends (the owners) - you seem to know everyone here. Again, thank you for sharing your cottage. We will be back!"
November 2007 - Sarasota, FL "Wow! Wow! Wow! What a wonderful week it has been for us, especially for a first time to St. John! November 2007 - Palo Alto, CA "Google + Finding Mooncottage = Perfection!!! Never going out to dinner + cooking meals in the great kitchen + snorkeling at Waterlemon Cay our first morning + snorkeling at Trunk Bay first thing in the morning bright and early + a perfect day with Jeff and Jen + taking every picture imaginable of the spectacular view = WOW!"
October 2007 - Washington, DC "If there were an internationally recognized 5 diamond Luxury Villa rating system, Mooncottage would be the standard by which all others are judged. It is a true masterpiece. The next time, I promise it won’t be another 2 years before we return again!"
July 2007 - Paradise, TX "What a beautiful place you created! We cannot think of a better way to spend our 10th Anniversary. You truly succeeded in your quest to make each day spent here feel like a honeymoon! We feel like Newlyweds all over again."
June 2007 - York, PA "Wow! What a wonderful week at Mooncottage. Starting off talking in the whole island of St. John and moving on to feel like true residents, that’s what Mooncottage can do to you. What awesome views and picturesque landscapes the place has to offer. Visiting almost all of the beaches was a highpoint. Mooncottage made for the best honeymoon we could have imagined. Awesome Zen feel, with great atmosphere for the romantic. Beautiful natural sounds at night made for a relaxing evening at all times. Thank you for a beautiful place we hope to make it back in the future."
June 2007 - Collinsville, IL "What a beautiful honeymoon this has been. We were married on Trunk Bay on June 11th; then made our way to Mooncottage. What a fabulous view! It was so relaxing to feel the constant wind and read a book or two or take a dip in the pool. This is by far the best trip we have taken together. Mooncottage just makes you feel that you need to relax and enjoy the surroundings. I can’t imagine a better place to spend the first week of marriage!"
May 2007 - Woodstock, GA "Wow! This place is fantastic! We were here for our 5th Anniversary. We enjoyed all of the things that have been mentioned already. The wind chimes were my favorite and my husband just loved to sit and stare at the view. We will be back next year!"
May 2007 - Glendale, CA "What a wonderful way to spend the first week of our married lives in such a beautiful home! Everything was beyond our expectations with the villa. Bravo for an outstanding, romantic little cottage. It was JUST what we were looking for. Our week on the island was great and we checked out most of the beaches and a few of the eateries. It was great being able to actually LOOK FORWARD to just coming back to Mooncottage and spending the evening in with each other. All is all I would be hard pressed to find a better spot for a honeymoon. Thanks for doing your part in making it so memorable! We hope to return in the coming year. We’ll never forget Mooncottage."
May 2007 - Albany, NY "One unbelievable vacation. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us. What a great way to start our lives together. (This was our honeymoon) Favorite things were the evening chorus we had with nature and being the first vacation where I actually relaxed and didn’t want to leave by Thursday. The beaches and the view and the people just made it more so. We were able to be by ourselves to explore the island in our own way and to be with each other 100% of the time and no one else. Thank you! We will be back again and again to spend another outstanding week at Mooncottage."
May 2007 - San Francisco, CA "Breathtaking! We spent 5 fantastic nights at Mooncottage and two at Caneel Bay. For the same price as Caneel Bay, Mooncottage was definitely the winner! Thank you for taking the time to build this perfect haven."
March 2007 - Brooklyn, NY "Thank you for such an elegant and peaceful introduction to St. John. We had a wonderful time here at Moon, but most importantly we RELAXED! A lizard yawned at me today which I took as a compliment, because I haven’t been this boring (AKA relaxed) in a very long time. We stayed at the cottage most all of the time. This place is so alive and magical. We are telling everyone in NY to stay here - 2 at a time of course. Yesterday there we saw the slice of bright moon in the blue day sky, a pretty awesome farewell if you ask us. Thank you for the much needed halt to our crazy, busy lives. We love St. John. We love Mooncottage."
February 2007 - Baltimore, MD "Thank you for the use of your marvelous home. You were very calming on the phone when we encountered delays in St. Thomas. My anxiety was totally dispelled when Jeff and Candy, your marvelous managers met us at the dock. Then, stepping out on the Mooncottage porch for the first time and we were sufficiently WOWed! It felt as though we could reach out and touch the moon and stars over the sea. You have created an oasis with a reverence to nature. Our stay has been all too short. We stayed exclusively at the cottage except for one visit to Skinny’s and one great meal at Sweet Plantains. Thank you again!"
February 2007 - Longmont, CO "Words can’t describe the slice of heaven called Mooncottage! Simple elegance absolutely perfect! Thanks for sharing your incredible villa with us."
February 2007 - Baltimore, MD "It feels as though we could reach out and touch the moon and the stars. You have created a lush oasis with true reverence for nature. Our stay has been all too short. Thank you!"
December 2006 - With gratitude. Villa Hills, KY "One day after turning the big 40... Oh! And let me tell you - Forty doesn’t suck! My husband and I have loved Mooncottage. Really spectacular design and so well built! We will return to enjoy a little more of doing nothing at Mooncottage. Its peace and quiet deserves being taken advantage of. Thank you for sharing. By the way, there was a complete, full out, full moon last night on my birthday. That was really beautiful (and lucky) to experience the full moon at Mooncottage."
Nov 2006 - Bedford, IN "The 25th Anniversary trip of a lifetime! Thanks so much for making this unforgettable. We know we picked the right place! We had several things planned to do, but found ourselves staying here most of the time."
October 2006 - Arlington, VA "The quality and care that went into Mooncottage are evident at every turn. We will miss those views and the chorus that went along with them! Not a bad way to wake up every day! I’m sure we’ll also miss the goats the donkeys and everything else that makes St. John what it is. Thanks for making us feel spoiled!"
October 2006 - Memphis, TN "WOW! What and amazing beginning to our marriage. We couldn’t have asked for anything so peaceful, beautiful, relaxing and romantic! We had the best week of our lives!"
July 2006 - Middletown, MD "Thank you for sharing your beautiful, 'one-of-a-kind' villa. It is certainly "St. John's Most Romantic Villa!" We enjoyed the gardens, the quiet and peace, the refreshing pool, the fantastic lighting, and the gorgeous view of Coral Bay and the British Virgin Islands. It has been a time for us to rejuvenate both personally and as a couple. We visited many beautiful beaches - Salt Pond, Francis Bay and Gibney and had some delicious meals. We went to Cruz Bay for lunch and left almost immediately.... we needed to get back to our escape at Mooncottage. We hope to come back to this "little piece of heaven" one day soon."
July 2006 - Detroit, MI "Coming up the road reminds us the purpose of our visit ... to spend time with just each other, away from all our stress of wedding preparations as well as the "After wedding." :) It is nice to realize that somewhere, there is a still a place untouched ... with nature everywhere. Thanks for sharing with us. This villa will be a part of out "beginnings." and always remembered with great fondness!"
July 2006 - "In response to the question about Mooncottage; that was our very first choice for our trip to St. John. The only reason we opted out of that is because there are 4 adults and the sleeping arrangements would not have been exactly perfect for us. The place is absolutely gorgeous and I have spoken with the Owner on occasion and he is wonderful. From all of my research anywhere that you stay on St. John (other than Cruz Bay) is going to be a 10 - 15 minute drive into town. If you’re going to be out really late at night "partying" then you may not want to stay that high up; otherwise; the trade winds up there and the view and privacy would far outweigh the short 10 - 15 minute jaunt into town. My husband and I plan to stay at Mooncottage for our trip back in 2007!"
