ST John Villas Road Gets Facelift

ST John Villas need nice roads to make life easier … but, on some parts of our lovely island still, the VI Territorial Government has never met their commitment to pave. In our case in Calabash Boom, many of our former guests have nothing but praise about our romantic Couples Getaways villas like Mooncottage and Villa Solemare–but, always wish the road up to the villas were a little better. Well, “us” ST John Villas owners on the hill have an association in which we collect private money and seasonally grade the road which is semi-paved. In addition, we are always working in conjunction with the Coral Bay Community Council to do work for matching Federal grants and pave the road a section at a time. This may not seem like a lot of work, but, believe me it is! The estimate for paving up to the top of our small road is in the $millions. So, we do it a bit at a time.

Now, since the weather has been so dry over the past few months, grading has not been possible because the dust would be everywhere. But, we had a nice stretch of rain recently, so the guys came up to give us a facelift that I am sure all of you who have endured (or laughed) at our little road will greatly appreciate. We are committed to investing our own funds semi-annually to keep the road more smooth and navigable. This is incidentally very important for the environment. Without paving, the fill from the roads can end up in Coral Bay when there rains are heavy, so we have an army of engineers always finding new ways to keep this from happening until the road is fully paved. “Swales” kept clear for water run off on the side of the road help keep the bay healthy.

So, enjoy a few photos of the smooth new results, and please come back to one of our super romantic ST John Villas soon and enjoy the fruits of all of this hard work–in a villa of course, not camping on the road.
